Saudi Arabia will showcase the largest pavilion at the Expo 2020 Dubai, after the host UAE pavilion. Its spectacular façade represents the Kingdom’s unlimited drive, its welcoming character and its deep-rooted culture.

For this project, we developed all the visual clips (30 in total) that are a central part of the OpenSquare stunning spectacle that completely covers the façade, floor, ceiling, laterals and the roof.
Cyan controlled the production, draft and tests as well as some sound creations and Fx of the Original Sound Track of the Pavilion.
Additionally we created six immersive “giant-mini games” that can be played on the OpenSquare simultaneously by dozens of visitors - all by harnessing the power of highly sophisticated blob recognition technology, at its best.
Cyan also created a complex “Immersive Preview Tool” essential for the clients in Saudi Arabia, during the development process. For this preview application, we created all 3D illustrations, visualizations, detailed immersive models, as well as the application that allowed the users to see, hear and feel the sensation of visiting the pavilion and interacting with it. The application was developed by our VR department for HTC Vive and pushing the limits of Unreal Engine technology.

In 1904, D. Josep Batlló commissioned Antoni Gaudí, the greatest representative of Catalan modernism, to completely renovate the building. It was the Batlló family home until the1950s.
Since the 1990s the building has been in the hands of the current owners, the Bernat family. It was fully restored under their custody; subsequently, opening up to the public and making the space available for cultural visits and events.

More than 20 audiovisual pieces were created for the house: Pepper’s Ghost installations, micro-mappings, Augmented Reality and bespoke audiovisual art installations. Noteworthy among the art installations is David Perez´s immersive “Gaudi Dôme” composed of more than a thousand screens, a spectacular 32 channels audio and a 360º sculpture mapping. All of these elements generate a new skin and a unique experience of Casa Batlló, a World Heritage Site.
CYAN made also audiovisuals and CGI visualizations have been made for several presentations.

At-Turaif, once a thriving 18th century ruling city of towering mud brick palaces, mosques, and defensive walls, lay in ruins until 2010. Within the site, a visitor center, farm, shaded walkways, exhibition galleries, signage, and multimedia have been carefully designed to fit within the existing ruins to welcome and educate the public.

At-Turaif project involves eight high-impact audiovisual installations (projections, Gobos, etc.) distributed across six spaces of the palatial complex. Each audiovisual production is thematic and has its own “look and feel” based on a distinct artistic technique, always suggestive and visually dramatic.

Wadi farm

These wadi farmlands are just outside the palace: sedimentary, fertile soils that treasure water, traditional agriculture and livestock. Thus, we embrace “dynamic-fertile-alive” concepts for audiovisual piece, based on vibrant colors, organic shapes, powerful color palette for water, the palm grove, animals. The scenes unfold in a hypnotically, encouraging the visitors to enjoy the beauty of the vibrant scape.

Abdullah Palace

Abdulah Palace audiovisual demonstrates the genesis of the decorative and architectural patterns of the Najd style, commencing the basic forms: points, lines or triangles until the final set. This visual structure grows gradually, from the basics to the complex: linear drawings of simple elements, visual mathematics exquisitely traced on the facade intertwine to compose more complex patterns. Visitors are guided gradually into a 3D space - an illusion of video mapping: forests of columns, long corridors and doors, daily activities of the inhabitants of the palace. Elegance rules as visitors appreciate the splendor of the palace.

Doors

Inside the Palace, a succession of exquisite decorative patterns is projected on door surfaces.

Guest Palace

The Guest House installation relies on elaborate visual technique to convey warmth, well-being and relaxation of the royal residence: smoke of the candlelight, the steam from the warm water in the bath, the scented effluvium from the coffee offered by the host. The gentle smoke leads the gaze from one scene to another, accompanied by a soundtrack of warm whisper.

Education area (5 pieces)

Five carefully choreographed concurrent projections, in close special proximity, focus on Islamic values through the teachings of the Quran. The imagery takes advantage of the ornamental delicacy of Arabic typography, and the importance of the education in Islamic world.

Gobos area (288 pieces)

Delicate, monochrome, thematic illustrations are projected on the surfaces throughout the museum. Thus offering visitors a unified visual thread.

Defense Wall

Animated elements guide the viewer along the large defensive wall, as the narration tells the story of strength and resistance of the defenders of the Palace. The wall provides a large horizontal band, a surface that lends itself to impact of scale and color. The dramatic narrative is enriched with intense contrasts, fast movements and surprising changes of perspectives.

Faisal Tower

Faisal Tower is a tribute to the fallen heroes of the Saudi Kingdom, the warrior and defenders of the Palace. We take advantage of tower´s tubular construction, maximizing impact of video mapping: showing the inside of the structure, deconstructing it and reconstructing it as a metaphor for the numerous times the Faisal Tower was destroyed and rebuilt.

Within the site, a visitor center, farm, shaded walkways, exhibition galleries, signage, and multimedia have been carefully designed to fit within the existing ruins to welcome and educate the public.

Salwa Palace is the physical representation of the First Saudi State, at its peak. Visiting the high walls, tall towers and intricate pathways of At-Turaif, visitors can appreciate that Salwa Palace is the largest of its kind in the entire Arabian Peninsula.
Projections are an intricate part of the visitor experience, focusing attention on the multi-layered architectural organization, passages, bridges and precincts (public, residential, administrative, etc.)

Palace Guards

This area is the point of entry - center of the palace, where the guards check who enters.

Reception

The unique characteristics of the city of ad-Dir'iyah are its religious atmosphere and the continuous presence of petitioners visiting the ruler. The area is buoyed by a mosaic soundscape of mostly male voices speaking sotto-voce, entering an enclosed space, occasional silent prayers, etc.

Majlies (2 pieces)

This projection encompases two structural levels: the Imam first appears on the ground floor, greets a Bedouin chief, and then climbs the stairs to the top floor to join the scholars on the terrace.

Public Treasury

The scene focuses on Zakat, the Islamic tax system as one of the pillars of Islam. In the First Saudi State, Zakat was perfected to a system of efficient and just distribution of wealth. Money and goods were collected from the rich provinces loyal to the Al Saud, and re-distributed to the needy.

Daily life

Scenes od daily activities inside the Salwa Palace.

Madrasa (2 pieces)

The column room of the Salwa Palace is one of the largest spaces in Atturaif. The scene shows young students learning the sacred book and other texts on Islamic mathematics and science.

Ablution and Mosque (3 pieces)

Ritual ablution conveys the ancient message that all people are equal: rich or poor, children or adults. One scene shows men and the Iman performing the ritual before prayer, another, a father teaching his son the ritual steps.

Salwa Palace and wadi Hanifah

The ancient settlement of Ad-Dir'iyah, situated along Wadi Hanifa, is one of Arabia's main wadis. It encapsulates the link between landscape, natural resources and human efforts to cultivate the land. The scene shows Imam's courtyard as he walks the spectacular terrace overlooking the palm groves of Wadi Hanifa.

The Spanish Pavilion, at the Astana 2017 Expo, proposes a reflection on the importance of moving towards a global energy system across different regions and communities of the world. A system based on renewable energies; drastic reduction of CO2 emissions; reduced dependence on oil; increased energy autonomy. Coordinated by Spanish Cultural Action (AC/E), a public body responsible for managing the presence of Spain in international and universal exhibitions, the project includes a showcase for the world of Spain’s role in the development of renewable energy supply and a pioneering position in research and use, as well as its commitment to the environment.

Under the integral direction of ACCIONA Producciones y Diseño, responsible for the exhibition design and execution of the pavilion, CYAN was selected to carry out the production of the walk-through video for this project, as well as, the audiovisual productions in the pavilion itself.

CYAN created an immersive VR experience for ACCIONA, to be presented at the AWEA 2016, in New Orleans (Louisiana, USA) - the biggest wind power conference in North America.
For the very first time, the public could explore a VR wind farm, in detail. The visitors could go inside the wind turbine tower, get an elevator up to the nacelle enclosure, look around its interior, learn how a wind turbine engine works, and then go outside the nacelle for a majestic view of the landscape from the very top of the windmill.

Developed by our VR department, this experience was designed for a variety of devices (HTC Vive, Oculus, Cardboard). The users can see, hear and feel the sensation of being in the pristine countryside, and can walk around using the platform-specific controllers.
We were aiming for a familiar, cinematic experience and made extensive use of a voice-over that accompanies the user at all times, in both Spanish and English.

Equatorial Guinea is an exotic and unknown country to Spanish population, although it was a Spanish colony until relatively recent independence, in 1968. Except for those involved in its settlement, the rest of Spain hardly knew anything about it. Many did not even suspect that the famous song of Cola Cao had something to do with this remote African paradise.
We are, only now, discovering Equatorial Guinea through its literature and cinema.

Bata, the second largest city of Guinea, is initiating an urban transformation that may make it one of the continent’s most modern cities. CYAN was commissioned to tell the story of this huge project, in under fifteen minutes. Aware that dense specifics of engineering and planning are of interest mostly to specialists, we decided the story should be more than dry numbers and statistics. We humanized the message.
